It is the eighth week of my internship. That means it has been seven straight weeks of clicking, drawing, typing, thinking and breathing random software, and there’s still a way to go! Last week, I worked on paintovers, which is exactly that – painting over a screenshot so it looks more like when the environment team is done with it. Generally, this would be a task for a concept artist, but since yours truly is intent on learning as much as I can about the process of game development as a whole, I took a stab at it.
I will not go into detail about it, but it still presents the same challenges as painting a concept-art piece, with the added factor that it’s a pre-existing environment. As the week went by, I learned that paying attention to detail and knowing what you want to do early on are two very helpful things to keep in mind. Also, you should be open to criticism and be willing to rethink ideas. It takes time, but the third try usually looks better than the first.
Concept art is definitely challenging, and the professional concept artists deserve pats on the back from all gamers. More to come on that next week …
Happy Turkey Day, everyone! And for those not living in the United States, Happy Last Week of November!

I just checked on your previous blog and caught up a little reading this. Mayn I’m half envious and half pitying with that time-consuming and uber-diverse tasked intern job of yours. =P
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving too and I assume a great winter in the office. ^^;
